In June 2009, two international events for optical technologies in Europe will once again take place in Munich, Germany. From June 15-18, the New Munich Trade Fair Centre will host the exposition “LASER World of PHOTONICS” and from June 14-19 the “World of Photonics Congress” will be held at the International Congress Centre Munich. Both events address to representatives from research, the laser and optoelectronics industries, professionals involved in medicine and technology as well as physicists, chemists, doctors, engineers, system designers, retail companies and service-providers. This year, the trade show and the congress have expanded their offerings for biophotonics and life sciences. The trade show is setting up an exhibition focus area dedicated to the subject of biophotonics. The World of Photonics Congress will present the field of biophotonics at the “Medical Laser Applications” conference. Experts in the field of lasers in medicine, optical diagnostics, high-end endoscopy and minimally invasive surgery will give practically orientated presentations.

In 2009, Austria will host the 9th Multinational Congress on Microscopy and the Dreiländertagung, presenting the joint meeting Microscopy Conference (MC) 2009. The MC will take place from Aug. 30 to Sep. 4, 2009 in Graz. The main areas covered will be instrumentation and methodology, materials science and life science. The program comprises plenary lectures, keynote lectures, poster sessions, symposia and workshops. Special emphasis will be given on the poster presentations, which means a considerable time will be allocated to the presentations and discussion of the posters. During the conference there will be a trade exhibition displaying modern instruments and state-of-the-art developments in microscopy. The venue of the Microscopy Conference will be Congress Graz in the historic city center of Graz.

Advances in photonics research with applications touching nearly every aspect of life will draw 17,500 scientists and industry leaders to SPIE Photonics West to San Jose, CA, U.S., from Jan. 24-29, 2009. Photonics West addresses experts in biomedical optics, lasers, MOEMS/MEMS, and optoelectronics. The week-long event offers research presentations, two exhibitions, industry executive panels, a continuing education program, a career fair, and numerous networking events. Both exhibitions and panels are open to registrants at no charge.
Panel topics include:
- Silicon photonics and optical interconnects
- Hot markets in photonics: solar
- Perspectives on the world of photonics
- Applications of high-power solid state lasers
The exhibition will include more than 1,100 companies showing the latest in components, systems, and applications for optics and photonics manufacturing, electronic imaging, infrared sources and detectors, optical detectors, fibers and materials, cameras and displays, and other innovations.

The European Light Microscopy Initiative’s (ELMI) 9th annual meeting on advanced microscopy will be held from June 9-12, 2009 in Glasgow, Scotland. Both, scientific presentations and hands-on workshops will be offered to the attendees. ELMI is a communication network of advanced microscopy users and manufacturers of imaging equipment. The conference aims to promote biological imaging as a fundamental tool for basic and applied research in the life science field. It will assist scientists working in the field of life science to exploit the power of biological imaging by improving the transfer of knowledge. ELMI meetings rotate through Europe, typically hosted by members who run imaging facilities. The next ELMI meeting, held at Caledonian University, Glasgow, will be hosted by Kurt I. Anderson from the Beatson Cancer Research Institute and Gail McConnell from the Institute of Biophotonics.

From Sunday April 5 to Wednesday April 8, 2009 the Focus on Microscopy (FOM) conference will take place in Krakow, Poland. It is the continuation of a yearly conference series presenting the latest innovations in optical microscopy and its application in biology, medicine and the material sciences. Key subjects are the theory and practice of 3D optical imaging, related 3D image processing, and reporting especially on developments in resolution and imaging modalities. The FOM conference also covers the rapidly advancing fluorescence labeling techniques for the confocal and multiphoton 3D imaging of live- biological-specimens. A technical exhibition will be a special feature of this year’s conference in Krakow.
Upcoming topics will cover:
- Confocal and multiphoton-excitation microscopy
- Novel illumination and detection strategies
- Fluorescence: new labels, fluorescent proteins, quantum dots, single molecule
- Time-resolved fluorescence: FRET, FRAP, FLIM, FCS
- Coherent non-linear microscopy: SHG, THG, SFG, CARS
- Raman, light scattering microscopy
- Multi-dimensional imaging
- Sub-wavelength resolution: near field microscopy, STED, PALM
- Laser manipulation, ablation and microdissection, photoactivation
- Optical tools in genomics, proteomics, phenomics, cytometry
- Magnetic resonance and X-ray microscopy
- Image processing and visualization
